Oh, How Much We Need Mary!
Mary, like any mother, leads us to Heaven. But how does she do this? She leads us to her Son, Jesus Christ, and through Jesus, we are led to the Father. You might ask, "Why do we need Mary?" First, we need Jesus to reach the Father. As He said, "No one comes to the Father except through me" (John 14:6). While we don’t need Mary for salvation, she certainly makes the road to Heaven easier. Through our devotion to her, Mary grants us countless graces. Just as she cradled her Son after He died on the cross, she will cradle and carry us to God.
As our mother, Mary loves us with that profound, unconditional love only a mother can offer. Jesus, who deeply loved His mother, listens to her. This connection, combined with Mary’s maternal care, makes the path to eternal life clearer. It’s only natural that she, as the mother of Jesus, can and will lead us to Him. After all, who doesn’t listen to their mother? And who doesn't know their own child? Now, let’s dive into our next topic.
A Special Prayer to Mary
One of the oldest Marian prayers is the Sub Tuum Presidium, which translates to “Beneath Thy Protection” in English. This prayer, dating back to the 3rd century, reads:“We fly to thy protection, O Holy Mother of God. Despise not our petitions in our necessities, but deliver us always from all dangers, O glorious and blessed Virgin.”We pray to Mary because this prayer holds such historical significance—it was one of the earliest Marian prayers ever created. In fact, it emerged in the 3rd century, during the time of the Middle Ages. Consider that while we face numerous challenges today, the people of the Middle Ages didn’t have the problems we encounter. Yet, from that remarkable era came a prayer like the Sub Tuum Presidium. If such a meaningful prayer was composed in those times, doesn’t it deserve our attention today? Were you aware of this prayer before now? It truly is a remarkable piece of history!
How Mary Helps Us in Times of War
On the day of the Battle of Lepanto, Christians—fighting as part of the Holy League—were pitted against the Ottoman Empire. It seemed like a hopeless battle, and a defeat would have meant the end of Christianity. Imagine being one of those soldiers, fighting for your faith with the weight of the entire religion on your shoulders. If I were in their shoes, I would feel an immense pressure. The battle took place in Greece, and Pope Saint Pius V, who was leading the Holy League, knew what to do. He ordered everyone to kneel and pray the Rosary. Every Christian in that battle called out to Mary, Help of Christians. The next day, against all odds, the Christians triumphed over the Ottomans! Who do you think helped them secure that incredible victory? It’s astonishing, isn’t it? She is the reason Catholicism stands strong today!
Pope Saint Pius V didn’t stop there. After the Battle of Lepanto, in 1573, he introduced a new feast called Our Lady of Victory—later renamed Our Lady of the Rosary—and it’s celebrated every October 7th. He also added the title Mary, Help of Christians to the Litany of Loreto. Now, fast forward a century to when the Ottomans threatened Christianity again.
In Austria, Emperor Leopold found refuge in Mary’s shrine as Islam advanced, overtaking Christian territories. When 250,000 Ottoman soldiers laid siege to Vienna, the capital, the Sultan declared that after taking Vienna, Rome would be next. Vienna was only a stepping stone; the real goal was to destroy Rome. But a man from Poland, Jan Sobieski—who would later be hailed as the savior of Western civilization—rose to the challenge. He turned to Mary, Help of Christians, for support, praying the Rosary during the battle. In these two great battles, people turned to Mary, Help of Christians. Isn’t that remarkable? So, when you find yourself in a struggle, who will you turn to?
How You Can Help Prevent World War III
Today, many people fear the possibility of World War III. But I am not one of them. After World War I, Mary appeared to the three children of Fatima and said, “If you do not pray the Rosary, there will be another war much worse than the first one.” And, as history shows, World War II followed. Why? Because of us. While Mary didn’t specifically mention a third world war after WWII, the message remains clear: Mary is urging us to pray the Rosary. The real question is, what are you going to do about it? Are you going to start praying for your country? Will you encourage others to pray the Rosary?
Don’t let the devil deceive you into thinking you’re too sinful to do these things. That’s just his way of keeping you from the powerful grace of the Rosary. Before I started selling Rosaries at church, I feared my pastor would say no. But that was the devil’s influence. You can purchase a Rosary from me at Holy Family Catholic Church. With this powerful prayer tool, you can protect yourself against the wickedness and snares of the devil. The devil is behind wars and suffering, but the Rosary shields us from them. You are not alone; we are all united in this battle against the devil, alongside Mary, the Holy Spirit, Jesus Christ, God the Father, and His angels and saints. Together, we can prevent World War III. We stand united to the very end.
